The SWTJC library has Chromebooks available at each of our locations in Crystal City, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, and Uvalde.

Chromebook borrowers are fully responsible for any damage to, loss of, or theft of the device and/or its accessories.

How Can I Get One?

  1. Chromebooks are available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the information desk at the library.
  2. Devices cannot be held for you and cannot be reserved. 
  3. Students must have a current SWTJC student ID and a clean library record.
  4.  Students must successfully complete the Quiz at the bottom of the page.
  5.  Students must sign a Chromebook User Agreement before borrowing a device.
  6. Users must have Wi-Fi access and a personal Gmail account to get the full function of the device.

How long can I keep a Chromebook?

  1. Chromebooks may be checked out for 1 month at a time.
  2. A late fee of $15 a day will be assessed if the device is not returned on time.
  3. If a device is more than 10 days late, it will be considered lost/stolen and the student will be responsible for paying $300 to replace the device.
  4. The student will also lose the privilege of checking out Chromebooks for the rest of the semester.
  5. Any unpaid fees/fines will result in a hold for grades, transcripts, registration, etc. for the semester and subsequent semesters.

What equipment is available?

  • Borrowers are responsible for inspecting the device and accessories at the time of check-out.
  • Any problems must be reported within 20 minutes of check-out or the borrower will be held responsible for the problem.

How much does it cost?

  1. This is a free service to Southwest Texas Junior College students who need access to a computer.

Borrowing Process

  1. One device can be checked out at the Information Desk to a current SWTJC student in the following manner:
    • Present a valid Student ID
    • Have a library record that is clear of fines
    • Documented completion of the quiz
    • Read and sign a Chromebook User Agreement each time a Chromebook is checked out or renewed.
    • If there is a problem with the Chromebook, you must return it to the Information Desk within 20 minutes of check-out, or you will be responsible for the problem.
    • Return the laptop on time to a library staff member NEVER A STUDENT WORKER.
    • NEVER LEAVE A DEVICE UNATTENDED ON THE INFORMATION DESK.

Loan Rules

  1. Chromebook borrowers are fully responsible for any damage to, loss of, or theft of devices and/or its accessories. No exceptions.
  2. Chromebooks check-out for a maximum of  1 month at a time.
  3. Renewal is permitted as long as another functioning device is available for other users.
  4. Return the Chromebook and accessories to a library staff member at the Information Desk for an official check-in process.
  5. NEVER LEAVE A DEVICE UNATTENDED ON THE INFORMATION DESK.
  6. Library Chromebooks, like desktop computers, are for college-related use in accordance with the policies of the Southwest Texas Junior College.
  7. Chromebooks will not be checked out over the holidays.

Fines and Liability

  1. A late fee of $15 a day will be assessed if the device is not returned on time.
  2. Two late returns will result in a loss of user privileges of library Chromebooks for the rest of the semester.
  3. Students who do not return a Chromebook clean and on time will be charged a $15 fine.
  4. Lost, stolen, or damaged units will result in a fee of $300.
  5. If the bag is missing or damaged, there will be a fee of $15.
  6. If the power cable is missing or damaged, there will be a fee of $30.
  7. If the HDMI cable is missing or damaged, there will be a fee of $10.

Security

WARNING – All devices will be reset to factory standards at the time of check-in.

  • Please be sure you have saved any information you wish to keep to another location before returning the device to the library.
  • Chromebook borrowers who lose, misplace, drop, spill food, or drink on the laptop or in any way render it inoperable, will be charged for damages.
  • Users must return the Chromebook and accessories directly to a library staff member at the Information Desk.
  • The library is not responsible for files left on the device or for loss or damage to user files during the loan period.
  • The library is not responsible for any computer viruses that may be transferred to or from the user’s storage device
  • .Students may not store files on the device. Save your data to a separate storage device or send it to your email.

Adding Microsoft Office Apps

  • Click on the apps icon in the bottom left corner of the screen
  • Select the “Web Store” app
  • Use the search box to find “Microsoft Office” products
  • To find Online products, click “Add to Chrome” button
  • Click on the apps icon again to see your MS product or use the magnifying glass key on the keyboard to find it

Honorlock

Honorlock is compatible with the Asus Chromebook devices.

Honorlock will no longer be compatible with HP Chromebooks
